59Imagination is an important human characteristic that has underpinned the development of the world and its various cultures. In this context, children learn ethnic and local languages as they grow up, and imagination forms the foundation of these linguistic resources. Drawings created by the kids globally demonstrate the existence of cross-border communication based on imagination, with these works highlighting a rich language in the form of colors and shapes to be shared by all mankind.The power of imagination 今日、私たちが「イメージ力」と呼称する心的な機能は、ヒトという生き物を特徴付ける大切な要素となっています。人類はイメージすることによって、世界を更新し、さまざまな文化を生み出してきました。一方、子どもたちは、成長すると特定の民族や地域の言語を操るようになりますが、それらの基盤となるものがイメージです。そして、世界の子どもたちの絵は、国境を越えたイメージによるコミュニケーションの存在を示しています。絵に表された色や形による言葉は、人類共通の豊かで大切な内容であることを教えてくれます。イメージする力水みず島しま 尚なお喜き聖心女子大学教授MIZUSHIMA NaokiProfessor, University of the Sacred Heart, TokyoThe 27th Annual World Children’s Picture Contest saw submissions from all over the world, with entrants freely expressing various concepts that had influenced them and portraying aspects of local culture. Many of the works featured rich rendering with intuitive use of individual colors, and the lively expression of their messages really conveyed the mood and atmosphere of the locales in which they were created. It was great to witness children’s unique artistic flexibility and high potential through such free expression drawn from emotional experience.
